Why playing bass guitar is important (to me).
I once heard the great drummer Steve Jordan say that he started playing bass not to become a great bass player, but to figure out where the beat ENDS. I love playing bass for 2 basic reasons: it helps me appreciate rock solid time keeping (I become more aware of how much I rely on the rhythm section to keep everything in check), and to appreciate melodic bass players that continue to inspire me as a guitar player. I offer this this as proof.
Most people know that my favorite pop band all time is XTC and Collin Moulding is definitely my favorite pop bass player - I like him more than McCartney (don't hate me for that). As a tribute, I transcribed "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul" from XTC’s album Skylarking produced by Todd Rundgren no less. Check it out!
